SuperCat Casino Review

If you adore your cat’s affection when she purrs and rubs her body on your legs, you’ll love SuperCat Casino. When you visit the gambling platform, a charming superhero cat mascot flies down with a gift in his hands to welcome you.
The gift— you receive 25 free spins when you deposit €7 or more. If you top up your account once more, Super Cat matches your deposit amount 100%. Of course, plenty of new casinos welcome new players with bonuses. So, what makes online casino Supercat different?
Established in 2018, SuperCat is still a new casino trying to navigate the vast world of online gambling. It’s owned by Atlantic Management B.V., a Curacao-licensed company.
It’s a small casino both in terms of the number of games provided and its customer base. And while it’s making efforts to expand its reach, Supercat doesn’t accept players from the US, Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Ukraine, and Canada. Find out more about the platform in our detailed Supercat review below.

SuperCat Casino Welcome Bonus

We already introduced Supercat as a generous superhero cat. And considering he could reward you over five times, there’s no argument the mascot is a kind mascot. To receive his offers, you need to make small deposits to your account.
With the first deposit, you get 25 free spins on the Spinata Grande casino. Upon your second top-up, you get a 100% Supercat casino bonus. The offer comes if you deposit at least €25. If you deposit €30 or more, Super Cat online casino will gift you 15 extra free spins on the Twin Spin slot game.
To test your loyalty, SuperCat doesn’t award you a bonus on your third top-up. However, it introduces its bountiful rewards on your fourth deposit, giving you 50% of your deposit amount as a bonus. The catch is that you must deposit €50 for the gift. It’s probably worth it, though, as you could withdraw up to eight times your bonus.
Depositing €100 and verifying your mobile number also gets you a reward from our superhero car friend. You receive 30 free spins in the Jack Hammer slot game.
If you prefer to make smaller deposits, the casino will still cherish you with gifts. For instance, you receive a 25% deposit bonus for all top-ups above €15 on Wednesdays. On Fridays, depositing at least €15 earns you a 50% bonus. On Sundays, refilling your account with at least €15 earns you a 75% bonus on an unlimited number of slot machines.
To withdraw wins from any of the bonus, you must wager the money 40 times. It’s a relatively high number of playthrough times, but the casino compensates that by allowing you to withdraw up to eight times your deposit amount.

SuperCat Casino Games & Software

Superheroes rarely guard dull places. In the world of Supercat, you could relish all your favorite casino games, play cards or compete against fellow players in the live casino section. And because Super Cat keeps dishing out gifts to players, you’ll always have money to gamble.
Netent, Playson, Betsoft, Microgaming, and Quickspin are the leading suppliers of SuperCat slots and table games. Evolution Gaming and Lucky Streak, on the other hand, keep live casino players thrilled with games like blackjack, poker, and roulette.
In case you’re not familiar with the companies mentioned above, they’re responsible for the most famous casino games. Netent, for example, made the award-winning Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest and Mega Fortune slots. Microgaming is responsible for the record-breaking jackpot game Mega Moolah and slots like Game of Thrones and Thunderstruck.
Evolution Gaming lets you play Texas Hold’EM, 3-Card poker, blackjack, roulette and baccarat in live settings. The remaining companies also have famous games, some you’ve probably played and won before.

SuperCat Casino Deposit & Withdrawal

SuperCat accepts an outstanding number of banking options despite being a new casino. You could use Visa or MasterCard if you prefer to pay using credit cards or direct bank transfers if you come from Turkey.
For many players, though, e-wallets like SOFORT, Yandex, Beline, ecoPayz, Neteller, Zimpler, Skrill and Perfect Money are better options. They’re faster than credit cards, cheaper than bank transfers and safer than some credit cards.
SuperCat also allows cryptocurrencies. So, if you’re a fan of Bitcoin, Ethereum and other altcoins, you never have to use regular payments on SuperCat. After all, you get access to all games and bonuses awarded to cash users.
When it comes to withdrawals, Super Cat promises to process payments within 36 hours. That’s less than two days, and faster than most casinos. You can withdraw up to €2000 per day or €40,000 per month, but you’ll be required to provide verification documents for withdrawals above $1000.
Like most modern casinos, you can request a payout 24/7, including on the weekends. According to multiple reviews online, SuperCat holds a solid reputation when it comes to paying out. There’s almost no complaint about withheld funds or unnecessarily long verification issues.

SuperCat Casino Customer Support

SuperCat features as an online chatbot that’s conspicuously visible on the right edge of the website. If you click it, you’ll get a message telling you whether there’s any available support staff to help you. It’s disappointing the casino doesn’t offer live support 24/7.
But being a small casino with a relatively limited number of complaints, round-the-clock support might not be necessary. Fortunately, you could also contact the company via email at [email protected].
As we mentioned earlier on, there are almost no complaints about SuperCat, its games or services. That means you can expect overall excellent services on the platform.

My 5 Favorite Coins Under $5 Million Market Cap and Why - Full Analysis

*Note: This article was copied from my medium article and then formatted for Reddit. For the best reading experience please read on medium. However, I wanted to format it for reddit so people could read it here on Reddit if they preferred. *

In this article, I will be sharing with you my 5 favorite coins that are currently sitting under a $5 million market cap. Before we get into things, I first want to cover all of my bases and say this is not investment advice. Please do your own research before making any investments. The coins I will be sharing are much riskier investments, so make sure to #DYOR.

Please keep in mind that these are all very risky investments and are not your $100 million + projects. These are high risk and high reward projects that will require you to do your own research. These investments aren't for everybody, but I wanted to share with you my thoughts on these coins.

Please follow me on Twitter for more updates, articles, and my thoughts on various other crypto related topics.

1. EquiTrader (EQT): $3.6 Million Market Cap

This is my favorite project that is currently under a $5 million market cap. EquiTrader is a social platform for traders where they can share their ideas and get rewarded by the community. EQT comes equipped with trading charts, indicators, trading tools and other features which will make it easy to make technical analysis. You will also have the ability to shadow other traders and make automatic trades based on what they do.

Why I Like EquiTrader

There are a lot of reasons why I’m bullish on EQT, the main ones our outlined below:

Perfect Product for Crypto

Having a social platform where traders can share their investment analysis and then get rewarded is a perfect concept for this market. I think that a lot of the major crypto influencers will get on this platform and utilize it, which will then in turn help EQT get bigger. Once the platform is up and running the “crypto OGs” will do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to marketing because it benefits them too. I’m a big fan of any crypto project where their main audience is the crypto market. This is an easy foot in the door and will allow the project to gain traction much quicker. I think EQT will do this as well.

Recently Acquired by a Major Crypto Influencer

It was recently announced that EquiTrader was acquired by Aluna.Social, which is a company owned by Alvin Lee (https://twitter.com/onemanatatime). Having a big player behind the platform will be extremely beneficial once the platform is launched and he can start promoting it. Plus this adds a lot of credibility behind the project as well. I’m a BIG fan of this news.

Many Upcoming Catalysts on Roadmap

Public release of the EQT platform is planned for Q4 of this year and I’d expect a lot of traction to start at this point. In Q1 of 2018 they will release the iOS and Android apps, Q2 the beta of the social trading platform will be released (huge news) and then in Q3 the social trading platform will be released to the public. We have at least a whole year of upcoming catalysts that will all have a major impact on the price.

Currently Only Trading on Coin Exchange

At this point you can only buy EQT on Coinexchange.io. It was listed on Cryptopia previously but when they did a coin swap they were removed. Why is this a good thing? The EQT team is in discussion with Cryptopia to be added now that the swap has been completed. Once this happens I’d expect a major pump. This will happen very soon so the major discount that EQT is currently trading at probably won’t last long.

Proof of Stake: 30% per Year Returns

As mentioned above, they recently did a coin swap and went from a PoW chain to a PoS one where you can get 30% annual returns from staking. This is an awesome return. I have already seen some great returns from staking.

What I Don’t Like

The biggest complaint I have about EQT is the small issue and delay they have had doing the coin swap. Before the coin swap they told everyone to move their coins to CoinExchange.io and the swap would happen automatically, which worked great for those who followed the instructions. However, there are a lot of people that didn’t do this and now they are having to manually swap these coins. This has caused a long delay in terms of being relisted on Cryptopia, which in turn has hurt the price. This isn’t a huge deal, but it is a small complaint I have.

Investment Potential

With a lot of catalysts on the roadmap until 2019, the potential of EquiTrader is hard to predict. However, I think a 10x from here, which would make the market cap only $34 million, is a very real possibility within 3 months. Even after a 10x, I still think it could get closer to $75 million before it would be getting close to what I think it should be valued at. As you can see, I think there is a lot of room for EQT to grow and I’m expecting it to do just that.

2. Hush (HUSH): $1.1 Million Market Cap

Hush is a very, very close second when it comes to my top 5 favorite projects under $5 million market cap. This project might have the most potential out of all of the coins in this list too. Hush is an anonymous coin that utilizes the Zerocash protocol that is forked from Zcash. There are quite a few Zcash forks out there, but this is the best one in my opinion (and the cheapest). It is a fairly new coin that launched in July 2017 so there have only been a few months worth of development.

Why I Like Hush

There is a lot to like about Hush and the reasons are explained below.

One of the Best Anon Coins

Hush is a fork of Zcash but without the founders reward, which is the only major knock of Zcash. So without the founders reward it becomes a top notch anon coin tech wise. There are other Zcash forks out there, but none of them are sitting at this low of a market cap, which creates a huge opportunity for Hush. A very similar coin to Hush is ZenCash, which currently sits at a $14 million market cap, is another Zcash fork without some of the features of Hush. Combine all of this with the major pump all anon coins have been going through lately and Hush is looking prime.

Great Team

One of the members of the Zcash dev team, David Mercer, is now the lead dev for Hush. This is huge. Not only is he the lead dev but he is also working full time on Hush, which means all of the promised features on the roadmap will have a good shot at being completed. Along with the lead dev, there are 6 total team members. The size and talent on this team is practically unheard for a coin with such a small market cap. This is a major reason for me being bullish. I know that this team will get things done, which is all you can ask from a team.

Counterparty on Hush

This is the biggest reason I like Hush so much. They are planning on porting Counterparty to Hush and this will allow people to create Counterparty based assets with the security of Hush. They are also planning on having these assets being compatible with Ethereum smart contracts. These are killer features that make Hush a unique project.

Only Trading on Cryptopia

At this moment the only place to purchase HUSH is on Cryptopia. The Hush team has confirmed they have been in contact with Bittrex and I don’t think it’ll be long before they are added. Take advantage of it being only on Cryptopia before it gets added to other exchanges, once that happens the price is going to take off.

What I Don’t Like

The major knock on Hush is their marketing. They are not putting much effort into spreading awareness. Their reasoning behind this is that they feel like they don’t have a finished product to market yet and that good tech will eventually win out. I like seeing a team that prides themselves on the tech of their project, but at some point they are going to have to start marketing it. Marketing plays a huge role in crypto. With all of that being said, I’m not complaining because it gives me more time to accumulate at these low prices. The only way people find Hush is from actually doing their own research. You won’t find it being shilled much on twitter because no one really knows about it. This will probably be changing in the near future.

Investment Potential

The $1.1 million market cap it is currently sitting at is almost funny. I can’t believe it is so low. This coin should be sitting at an easy $10 million market cap SOLELY based off of what the project currently is. Factor in some of the upcoming features such as the Counterparty port and a standalone HUSH messenger and I think Hush could be worth at least $50 million in 6–12 months, if not higher. The reason I say it could be higher is because of the dev team. I’m very confident in the team and believe that in 12 months from now they will be working on features that will blow the current features out of the water.

3. Tokes (TKS): $1.8 Million Market Cap

Coming in at 3rd in my top 5 is a coin called Tokes. I’m a big fan and this is one of my long term plays that I think will be worth a ton in a few years time. This isn’t going to be a 10x coin in 2 months, but in 2 years it very well may be a 100x coin. Keep that in mind while reading. Tokes is a Waves based asset that is geared towards the marijuana business. They are looking to help businesses handle their money and provide a better payment solution for both consumers and businesses. They are also doing a few other really interesting things in this space and I will explain why I like Tokes in the next section.

Why I Like Tokes

Tokes is a coin based around the marijuana business, but it does much more than the other pot coins out there. Tokes is looking to actually solve real world issues in the marijuana business and has partnerships with major players in their area. I will touch more on all of these things, but I want to make ti clear this isn’t just a “pot currency”.

Provides a Fiat Gateway

A major issue for marijuana businesses is that they are forced to operate as a cash-only business due to the federal laws that make banks not want to work with them. This is a major problem within the cannabis industry and Tokes is trying to solve this by creating a fiat gateway. Tokes allows for cash to be converted to TKS and vice versa so that it can stored electronically without the need to carry cash around. They also offer no fiat volatility risk because of their pegging system. This means that the $100,000 of cash they turn into TKS will remain $100,000 when they withdraw it. This is a major issue that is being solved by Tokes and gives their project immediate value and use cases. Keep in mind that this is something they are working on implementing and hasn’t actually been developed yet.

Major Partnerships Secured

Tokes is located in Las Vegas, where marijuana laws are some of the most lenient, and they have been hard at work building relationships and partnerships with the marijuana businesses in that area. Some of their partnerships are as follows:

Pisos: A dispensary in Vegas that is their first partner in their pilot program Herbology Tours: Tokes purchased a 10% ownership stake in this company. More on this in a minute. Cannabis Delivery Startup in California: Payment integration into their mobile app

Tokes purchased a 10% ownership stake in a Las Vegas cannabis tourism company and this has a couple of really cool benefits. First, it gives Tokes a foot in the door with a marijuana company where they can start integrating and testing their system. Second, it’s a great way to get their name out there and start spreading awareness. This will go a long way to help both consumer and business adoption. The last major benefit of this ownership stake is that they will get 10% of all of the revenue from Herbology Tours, which will be used to help grow Tokes. This revenue will also be used as a way to potentially buy and burn coins (more in the next section).

Revenue Used to Burn Coins

Tokes plans on getting into other aspects of the marijuana business and portions of this revenue will possibly be used to buy and then burn the coins, thus decreasing the supply. The revenue that they generate from their 10% ownership stake in Herbology Tours will also be used to burn coins. Im a big fan of coins that burn their own supply and the markets go crazy when this happens (See $TRIG and $DAR). It’s worth noting that they are planning on burning coins with revenue, but it is not 100% concrete yet.

Great Roadmap

Their roadmap extends all the way into Q4 of 2018, which is good to see. There are also a lot of good things to look forward to and a lot of catalyst that should help the price increase along the way. Check out the roadmap here

What I Don’t Like

The biggest issue I have with Tokes is their supply problem they have. Currently, there are only around 960k in circulation out of the total supply of 50 million (according to Coin Market Cap). The founders currently own the remaining ~40 million tokens. The good news is they are actively trying to solve this issue and release these tokens in a way that won’t hurt the price. One of the main ways they hope to remedy this situation is by putting all of the tokens in a smart contract and distributing it during a 3 year period. You can read more about their plans here.

I’m not a big fan of the current supply issues, but I think the founders are on the ball on this issue and will figure it our without too many problems. Investment Potential I really like the fact that Tokes solves a real issue by providing a store of value for cannabis businesses and allowing them to move away from cash only operations. This has so much value. Combine that with their current partnerships, pilot program and their upcoming roadmap and Tokes looks like a real good long term investment.

Where Tokes could really see their value skyrocket is after they get a foothold in Las Vegas and establish their name in the cannabis industry, they will be the first company other cannabis companies call once their states become legal. Like I mentioned before, this is a longer term play but could be huge in a few years time. In the short term, I think they could easily get to ~$25 million just based off of continuing to lock in partnerships, releasing their mobile app and solving their supply issues.

4. SmartCash (SMART): $2.5 Million Market Cap

Coming in at 4th on my list is SmartCash. SmartCash is a fork of Zcoin, but it has a some of the same features as Dash along with a few unqiue twists that makes this coin very undervalued. The coin itself was started less than 3 months ago, so the project itself is still very new.

Why I Like SmartCash

Any anon coins right now that haven’t pumped yet are of interest to me. It seems like everyday a new anon coin is pumping and the fact that SmartCash hasn’t yet is appealing. Not only has the coin not pumped yet, but it has a super small market cap and is a better coin than the majority of the other anon coins out there. Aside from it being an anon coin, the following reasons are why I like this project.

Insane Staking with SmartRewards

This is a major reason for this coin being in my top 5. They have a cool feature called SmartRewards which is a way for people that hold their coins in their wallet to get rewarded. The only requirements are that you must have at least 1000 coins and hold them for at least a month, starting on the 25th of each month. For example, you transfer 5,000 coins on September 16th then you would be rewarded on October 25th. Since this coin is so new, there has only been one completed round of payouts so far. During this first round each person eligible made 400% returns. Example, if you had 1,000 coins in there then you would have been paid 4,000 coins!

400% is insane and for this second round of payouts things are a little less extreme. At the time of writing this (halfway through the month) the current estimated payout is going to be 37%, still not bad at all! This numbers goes up as the month goes on and less addresses become eligible. The reason for the drop off is because there are more eligible addresses than the first round. These rewards are funded by taking 15% of all of the coins mined from each block and then on the 25th of each month are distributed to addresses that hold at least 1000 coins. Not only are the returns very good, but this is also a great strategy to lock up coins and keep the price from dropping too much. SmartRewards is a huge reason for me being in this coin and I think it will be very popular once more people find out about it.

Great Funding System
I’m a big fan of their funding system and how they split the block reward. Their funding structure is as follows:

Of the 80% allocated to the community, 70% of it goes to the community treasury and 30% of it goes to funding the team. I like the reversed model they have of paying the community the bulk of the rewards and the miners the least. I think this is a good way to get people involved and help grow the coin via community funded projects.

Governance System
With a large chunk of all coins mined going towards community treasury it gives the community a lot of coins to use on various proposals that will be voted on by the community. These proposals can be pretty much anything helping the coin grow and the community gets to determine if it is a good idea or not. Each vote is equal to 1 smart cash.

As of writing this, there have been 3 community proposals that have been funded. Those 3 include:

As the community gets larger, I’d expect the number and quality of proposals to improve and then we will really get to see the benefits of this funding system.

Instant Transactions via InstantPay

This is a feature that is going to be implemented in the near future and would allow for near instant transactions. This is crucial to have if you are trying to be a coin that is used for everyday purchases, which SmartCash is trying to do.

Not on any Major Exchanges

Currently, the exchange with the largest volume where you can buy SmartCash is Stocks.Exchange and Cryptopia. Whenever Bittrex or Poloniex get around to adding this coin there should be a nice pump. Now is the time to accumulate!

What I Don’t Like

I’m not a fan of coins with a large supply of coins and SmartCash has 5 billion coins as its max supply (451 million circulating). The idea behind having so many coins was to become the everyday coin that is used and its easier if people are paying in a small amounts. I get the idea behind it, but I would still prefer a coin with a smaller supply.

Investment Potential

This coin is still fairly new and a lot of people have still never heard of this coin. I think as more people become aware of SmartRewards and the insane monthly returns that people will start to flow into this coin. Couple that with things such as masternodes (coming soon), InstantPay, a functioning governance system, and anonymous transactions and you have a severely undervalued coin at $2.5 million. Short term potential for this coin is at least $10 million market cap, but $25 million within a few months is completely reasonable. This coin has all of the characteristics of coins that are worth hundreds of millions of dollars so I don’t plan on selling this coin for a while.

5. Crypto Bullion (CBX): $1.3 Million Market Cap

Last but not least we have Crypto Bullion, which currently has a market cap of $1.3 million. This coin was originally developed in 2013 but has seen recent improvements that have made it a great dark horse pick. This coin is a 100% proof of stake coin that was originally created as a way to store value with a yearly interest rate of 2%. as mentioned above, it has become way more than this with the new developments that are currently under way. Let’s take a look at why I like this coin.

Why I Like Crypto Bullion

Crypto Bullion will be having a hard fork before the end of the month where they will be implementing quite a few new features that I think takes this coin to the next level. Some of these features are as follows:

Masterbodes are Coming

Once the hard fork occurs, masternodes will be coming to CBX along with Zerocoin anonymity. Once the masternodes have been implented it will make CBX one of the cheapest masternode coins on the market. These masternodes will earn roughly 9% — 18% yearly plus any of the fees they make from transactions. It will cost 2,000 coins to run your own masternode, which is currently around $2,000.

Solid Roadmap

They have a very solid 2017 roadmap leading into 2018 and they are planning on releasing a 2018 roadmap once this one is completed. I would expect a lot of cool new features to be added on the next roadmap. See their roadmap here

New Wallet Being Released

They are currently putting the final touches on a new wallet and getting ready for the hardfork. All of this should be happening by the end of September.

Low Supply

As of right now, there are only around 1 million coins with a very low inflation rate of 2% per year. With staking, you would make around 6% per year in interest. This means the coins are rare and scarce.

What I Don’t Like

From what I have seen, the communication from the dev is subpar and you can be left in the dark at times. Also, even though they have some cool features in the pipeline, they aren’t really bringing anything new to the market.

Investment Potential

I think CBX has built itself a nice little niche with becoming a true store of wealth, unlike Bitcoin, and that fact alone should make it worth more than its current market cap. However, with the upcoming hardfork that will bring masternodes and a new wallet we should see a lot more investor interested in this coin. I’m holding this coin until at least a $10 million market cap and probably even longer depending on what kind of developments happen in the meantime.

Honorable Mentions

I’m not going to dive deep into any of these coins below, but they are worth mentioning.

Wrapping this Up

That is going to bring this article to an end. I hope you enjoyed reading and found a coin or two that might interest you. These 5 coins are all coins that I will be holding for nothing less than 10x each, probably even more. These are not your “safe investment” coins by a long stretch, but if you’re looking for some high risk/high reward coins then these might be of interest to you. I’d love to know what coins you are all fans of that I didn’t put on the list. Please share in the comments below. Thanks for reading and if you enjoyed this article please follow me on medium for more posts!

Two underlying factors in the bubble cycle

In this post, a theory is presented about why cryptocurrency bubbles behave the way they do: more coins are sold by miners during the bottom of the cycles, and changing coins to dollars is impossible for many people. Source: https://forums.prohashing.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5826
Good afternoon! Now that we have time to relax after releasing charity mining, I thought that it was worth straightening out two misconceptions that seem get posted over and over again across the Internet. These ideas appear to come from people who don't actually work in the cryptocurrency industry or who don't actually spend any coins to buy anything.
There are two constant market forces unrelated to traders and purchasers that act in opposition to each other, and understanding them explains a lot about why markets act the way they do. I'll show that they can explain the existence and behavior of the bubble cycles that are especially pronounced in cryptocurrencies.
Mining sell pressure increases as prices fall
One of the most common refrains I see posted is that miners are supposedly more likely to save coins during the downcycle of bubbles, because they want to accumulate as many as possible so that they will be worth more when the next bubble starts. This is a sound investment strategy, but it doesn't work when you're running a business.
For example, our expenses are currently fixed at $1,574/day. This amount is what it costs for electricity, server maintenance, Internet connectivity, salaries, health insurance, reviewing 1099-MISC and W8-BEN forms, legal advice, taxes, and so on. Ideally, we would be investing more, but the massive labor shortage makes it impossible to hire anyone in this economy. Our revenues have been remarkably stable at about 11 bitcoins per day - down from about $230,000 per day in December to around $06,000 now. At the targeted 5% revenue, we earned around $11,500/day back then, and about $3,000/day now before expenses.
Of the $11,500 per day that was being earned back in December, about 15% was being spent or exchanged to dollars for business expenses and necessities like Purse purchases. Now, with $3,300 per day being earned, about 50% of coins are being spent or exchanged to dollars to pay business expenses and necessities. The rest accumulates and remains in the business's paper wallets for the part of this cycle when things get really bad - but there were more bitcoins going into the wallets in December. If the bitcoin price declines towards my earlier predicted capitulation low of $980, we will not only spend all of the coins we earn, but will also start drawing down the paper wallets to pay 200% of what we are earning to survive until the cycle reverses.
This is why the theory that miners will hold more coins because they think that the price will rise is incorrect. Expenses are fixed. We saved more money, in both dollar value and number of coins, when the value of coins was high. We are not able to hold as many coins now because more are being spent to pay fixed expenses. When prices fall even more, we'll actually start spending more than the coins we mine.
I strongly believe that the next bubble will see many coins (especially ETC, which is significantly undervalued because the ETH network is overloaded) rising to 20x multiples of what they are worth now. I also dislike wasting money on useless stuff like expensive cars and big houses and would rather save it. But that doesn't mean we're saving more money than when the coins were worth more. We still have to spend $45,000 per month. Before, that meant spending four blocks of litecoins; now, it means spending twenty.
Throughout the years, I've always wondered why coins seem to be so much more susceptible to bubbles than stocks are. Some try to write off the volatility as being due to the low market capitalization of coins, but bitcoin has a larger market capitalization than most companies, and it is still more volatile. I suspect the true reason is that stocks are not mined. The selling pressure from miners increases as the value of coins declines, because they have to unload more and more of them to stay solvent. The bubbles become like self-fulfilling prophecies. As prices decline, miners have no choice but to unload more coins onto the market. Once prices begin to rise, fewer and fewer coins are spent by miners, amplifying the cycle in the opposite direction.
Changing coins to dollars is difficult
People seem to miss is that even if it were possible to predict that a bubble has peaked with 100% accuracy, it's still extremely difficult to convert coins to dollars.
The first reason for this trouble is that there are a lot of costs involved. First, there are exchange fees and transaction fees associated with moving money to exchanges, which in December cost $40. Then, there is the rule that long-term gains are taxed as a lower rate than short-term gains. These taxes are, of course, applied on top of your income, so they are in the highest bracket. In our case, selling coins means setting aside about 26% to pay long-term capital gains taxes to all the tax agencies - but when coins are re-bought, short-term capital gains taxes are now applied. The short-term capital gains rate is about 45%.
Therefore, even if I were 100% certain that bitcoins would fall from $20,000 to $16,200, it still doesn't make sense to sell. Assume that I have one bitcoin that was bought for close to zero. Selling it at $20,000 would mean that I owe 26%, or $5200 in taxes. I have perfect timing and buy back 0.913 bitcoins with my remaining $14,800 at a cost of $16,200. This sounds like a great deal - I lost 9% of my bitcoins to pay 26% owed in taxes!
But when the price of bitcoins rises back to $20,000, I now owe 45% "short term gains" on the $4800 increase. My 0.913 bitcoins sold for $18,200, I owe $2,200 in taxes at 45%, and therefore I am left with $16,000. With perfect market timing, I somehow lost $200. Plus, if you need to re-read this calculation to make sense of it, then that should give you an idea of how much of an opportunity cost there is in time trying to sort this stuff out.
But there's a more important reason many people hold coins instead of dollars. It may not be illegal to sell coins, but everyone will treat you like it is.
In an earlier post, I talked about how Chris has already had two bank accounts closed (see viewtopic.php?f=11&p=18825), despite the accounts being used for no other purpose than to pay taxes. My theory is that banks have some sort of automatic trigger, where large transactions cause some sort of internal audit. Banks treat customers like criminals until proven otherwise. This internal audit seems to be much stricter than whatever paperwork they are required to file with government agencies.
Avoiding the use of banks isn't about avoiding illegal activity, since we don't have anything to hide. It's about avoiding unnecessary attention. Even when you're not doing anything wrong, you still have to spend time and sometimes money constantly proving that.
My impression when dealing with the government and banks is that, for whatever reason, they are laser-focused and see everything in terms of dollars. Dollars are worth something, and when you convert things into dollars, you have money and are rich. They view coins as something that isn't real, in that you aren't rich until you have a bank account with a lot of dollars in it. The reason is probably because most of the financial crime seems to go through banks - i.e., Paul Manafort thinking that transferring $11m through wire transfers would somehow be hidden from taxation.
This attitude extends to everyday people, too. To this day, there are still people who say things like "well, the business earns you coins, but how to you turn that into money?" I have four times as many coins as everything else I own combined, and yet to them my net worth is a portfolio of stocks, my old Prius, an electric bike that is worth just as much as the Prius, and a few other things. To them, the coins are just something else I happen to have "invested in" that isn't real money.
You can use this socially and legally to your advantage. The IRS allows people to hold as many coins as they want, and as long as they aren't spent, they can sit in paper wallets forever without owing a dime in taxes. There aren't any documentation requirements for declaring how many coins one owns, and unlike cash stored under a mattress, a split key can't be stolen or lost in a fire. A bag of cash being carried across the country is automatically suspected as being drug-related, while a paper with a private key is overlooked. Banks have no right to decide that they don't like your coins and freeze accounts pending investigation. And it seems like the average person doesn't consider coins as a form of "real money," so most people don't see you as rich with all the problems that come along with that.
Finally, even if I wanted to convert all these coins to dollars, I would have to send them to an exchange. Chris had his Coinbase account suspended "pending account review" for three months before their incompetent customer service finally was able to get around to his ticket and resolve the issue. We closed a Bitflyer account, because they won't connect brokerage accounts from "intermediate" clearing banks where the name of the account at the intermediate bank is the bank's name. Again, all of this is because of this idea that as soon as coins are converted to dollars, they suddenly become "real money" or something. To see how the concept of dollars being special is true, all one has to do is to trade on Coinbase's BCH/BTC market and discover how the trades execute instantly and you'll never have an account frozen for any amount of trading.
Not converting coins to dollars results in the least amount of trouble, and that's why I don't spend dollars anymore. You can buy anything, or a gift card to buy anything, at Purse.io. When buying something, I don't check how much the coins are worth.
You don't have to be doing anything wrong, and you can even have strict policies like our 1099 form noncompliance and zero-tolerance no drug discussion rule and still encounter problems like frozen accounts. There is a lot of money in coins that is being left there because, like me, the owners fear that they will be accused of wrongdoing and have to deal with months of customer service or civil law issues if they ever converted it to legacy currencies due to the misconceptions of many people. If the value of coins drops 90%, then they'll still have more money than the zero they would otherwise have, since there is no legitimate way to sell change large amounts of money to dollars. Note that the much smaller group of criminals who actually are involved in drugs also can't sell, contributing to this floor - money in ransomware wallets, for example, is unspendable because any transaction would lead to an immediate arrest.
This is also why the trite saying "it could all go to zero" is 100% incorrect. Coin prices have exactly zero probability of going to zero across the board. In fact, the idea that "only a few coins will survive" is also demonstrably false. Historically, only about 10% of the 793 coins we have ever offered for payouts have been delisted from all exchanges in the past five years.
Conclusion
How do these two forces work together? While traders buy and sell coins at various times, miners are probably the largest economic group that continually uses and exchanges in cryptocurrency. Mining accentuates the bubble cycle because the fixed costs result in more and more coins being sold as the bottom of each cycle approaches. At some point, however, a point is reached where the large number of people like me who have no other option of what to do with their coins provide a floor to prices. All the traders capitulate, but the group who has too much money to do anything else with it never sells. That reverses the cycle, and as soon as prices begin to rise, miners start selling fewer and fewer coins, accelerating the recovery.
It's impossible to fully understand the cycles without understanding that traders, while important, are only one group of people in a complex economy. The cycle is largely caused by miners, and the "coin-only" users provide a floor. Traders often panic that every drop is "the end," and discount that there is a floor because they lack understanding of the headaches associated with converting coins to dollars.
Finally, if you have doubt that coins will displace existing currencies some day, consider that banks are causing the transition themselves. Every day, more and more money gets caught up in coins because it is so difficult to exchange it in the old system. The floor of "can't sellers" grows higher and higher every day. Eventually, the number of people who have coins like this will grow so large that businesses will recognize the market to serve them is huge. The banks, far from trying to stop coins, are giving people no other option than to use them.

I am stepping down as a moderator of r/btc and exiting the bitcoin community and entering the Ethereum community.

I am stepping down as a moderator of btc and exiting the bitcoin community. Thank you all for fighting until the end. I know I am going to get a lot of hate from pretty much everyone for this post, but I felt the need to post it anyway.

Why Give Up?

I think bitcoin is past the point of no return. There are a number of different routes that bitcoin could take this year, and as far as I can see, they all end up at the same destination; failure. I know I am going to get a lot of flack for this post, and I understand that. I have witnessed bitcoin being announced “dead” many many times throughout its history and I absolutely could be wrong, but almost every one of their predictions were based on a lack of understanding of bitcoin. I don’t feel my prediction is has a lack of understanding. If I am wrong, then I feel it will be through sheer luck that bitcoin survives. I was a bitcoin early adopter in 2011 and have invested far more time into bitcoin than is reasonable. I truly hope bitcoin does survive, but what I think will happen is not predicated on what I want to happen.

How might bitcoin fall?

The Past

I am not going to go through everything that has lead us up to this point. Many of your are well aware of what has brought us here. Bitcoin up until the beginning of 2014 was an unparalleled success. For those of you who weren’t around at the time, there was a huge amount of excitement in the community at all times. It felt like every month there was some announcement that had a positive impact on bitcoin. A new major company offering bitcoin payments, a bitcoin company offering a new service, a new piece of software being added to clients to make them more useful. Bitcoin was making continual progress and the community was unified. Compare the situation back then to day. We have now had 2 years of stagnation, and in many cases degradation of the network.

The Present

The network is now slow and expensive (and getting slower and more expensive), companies have been leaving bitcoin at an exponential rate. No new major companies have adopted bitcoin and there are no signs of this changing in the future. The community is irreparably divided and is at war with itself. Development has stalled.
Where bitcoin has stalled, other cryptocurrencies have been making enormous ground. Bitcoin does not exist in a vacuum. It has competition. Other cryptocurrencies already offer significantly more advance features than bitcoin. The only thing bitcoin has left over other cryptocurrencies is it’s network effect. The inertia of network effect is truly enormous. Bitcoin has been coasting on it for 2 years now. Technology develops rapidly though, and many people are always looking for the next big thing. Investors want to make money and developers want to work on the most advance and growing technology. There has been very little investment into new bitcoin specific companies over the past 2 years. The only new bitcoin company I know of that has received significant investment in the past two years is Blockstream. There has been a very large amount of investment into blockchain companies in general though. The money is there, it’s just not going into bitcoin.
Ethereum has now reached close to 1/3 of bitcoin’s market cap and there is no sign that it is going to let up any time soon. The ethereum community is a breath of fresh air compared to the current bitcoin community and it feels very nostalgic there. It feels very much like the bitcoin community did 3-4 years ago. They have showed that they are not afraid of using hard forks to upgrade the protocol. They have a leader who is intelligent, pragmatic and good at communicating and IMO who is likely to get the network through the early volatile years. The community showed that they value pragmatism and reality over ideology when they stopped a theft of a large percentage of the currency supply and did so without having any adverse affects on anyone other than the thief. They also achieved this while under attack from bitcoin. They have been working with major organisations and companies to promote and forward the use of the network and they listen to the users of the network to find out what problems they have and which features they want, and then work towards satisfying the needs of their users. The developers of the network have known large holdings of the currency, which means conflicts of interest are less likely to arise and protocol development can directly correlate increased returns for the developer’s investment.

The Future

There are a number of possibilities, but I believe all end with very similar outcomes.

Scenario 1 - BU/EC gains 75% of the network hash rate

If BU gains 75% of the network hash rate, a hard fork will become likely (although not certain). Core and their supporters will start to try and burn down the network. All communication channels will overflow with FUD (some real, some fake). Core supporters with large bitcoin holdings will start dumping them on the market in ways that will cause the most damage to price. Core will start recommending at the very minimum a difficulty readjustment and quite likely also a POW change. Price will fall extremely far as speculators adjust their risk exposure and wait out the storm, traders will short the market to make as much money as possible during the fall, and core supporters try to get the BTC price to go as low as possible on the BU/EC side of the fork and BU/EC supporters try to get the price to BCC price to go as low as possible. Whatever the price is before the fork is certain, I think it is likely to reach 50% of that between the time a fork becomes certain and when the fork actually happens. After the fork happens the price could go down to literally any level. While this is happening, the Ethereum market cap is going to overtake bitcoin even if the Ethereum price does not increase (which it will). Bitcoin will not survive this. The moment Ethereum overtakes bitcoin as the biggest cryptocurrency, everyone will find out. It will be posted in articles in every technology news website on the internet. Once the casual bitcoin holders/users find out (hint most do not even pay attention to what is going on in bitcoin) they will quickly panic and either sell to fiat, or sell into Ethereum to speculate. Mining will almost instantly become unprofitable at that point. Monumentally unprofitable in fact. The payout of 12.5 per block will not even slightly cover the cost of electricity and because miners have no direct control over the price of bitcoin they will be absolutely powerless to do anything other than mine at a loss for a very long period of time. If bitcoin price drops to $100, which IMO is very conservative, then it is likely that 90% of the miners will have to turn their hardware off. This means that the difficulty adjustment periods will increase by a factor of 10 to 20 weeks. These miners that are left will need to mine at a huge loss for up to 20 weeks, or hope that somehow the price recovers. I don’t think even the biggest miners could survive that. Further difficulty reset hard forks will be proposed and it will be chaos.
While all of this is happening, Ethereum is likely to be running fine and price will likely be rising significantly as money from bitcoin pours into it.

Scenario 2 - BU/EC never gains 75% of the network hash rate

In this scenario there will be absolutely stalemate. Core will not be able to implement Segwit and therefore will not be able to change bitcoin into a settlement network, but also the transaction throughput will not be increased through larger blocks. The debate will have become so vitriolic that no further progress can be made within bitcoin. Bitcoin simply will not scale on OR off-chain. In this scenario the end is not so violent like in scenario 1 but then end result is the same. Ethereum (and other cryptocurrencies in general) will continue to gain market share throughout the year as Bitcoin remains stuck in stalemate. The bitcoin price continues decreasing and the Ethereum price keeps on increasing until Ethereum overtakes bitcoin. Once the flip happens, it will accelerate significantly as people realise what is happening. The end result is the same as the later part of scenario 1.

Scenario 3 - BU/EC lose most/all of the network hash rate

In this scenario Core manages to get Segwit accepted by the network. Most people in btc simply leave bitcoin for good. Fees will remain high and transaction throughput low. Core will not increase the block size limit until after LN has been proven to work and users have been forced/coerced into using it. LN is not anywhere near ready for production and it is likely to take at least 2 more years until it is released and working and another year or two until it is fully implemented into wallets, and then another year until businesses are able to understand and use it in their backend. I.e. in an ideal world where everything works as intended in this theoretical system it will take 4-5 years until bitcoin has similar properties to what it had 2 years ago. This obviously ignores the fact that there has been no analysis on whether this would even work on an economic level, let alone a technological level.
As transaction fees rise users and business will be pushed into using other cryptocurrencies and fiat and at some point bitcoin’s network effect will be overcome by Ethereum’s. This scenario is essentially the same as scenario 3, but there maybe some initial price pump when Segwit activates and people enjoy and end to the debate. This will likely be short lived though.

What is most likely to happen (IMO)

If BU/EC is to continue to gain further market share of the hash rate and reach the 75% requirement that many parties have suggested. It is likely to take at least a couple more months of deliberations. For this to happen, a number of large pools will need to switch over. Bitfury has stated that they will not support BU and are mining Segwit and have even started mining UASF blocks. HaoBTC is still sticking to the HK agreement (which literally no one else is) and will not be running anything other than Core. This means it is really down to F2Pool and some of the smaller Pools. F2Pool has stated that it will stop signalling for classic and there is no indication that it will start signalling for anything other than Core (not segwit), and has stated that he thinks BU is dead.
This suggests that the most likely scenario is scenario 2. BU/EC will not activate, but nor will Segwit. There are some things that may or may not happen in this scenario. For example it seems that Core are willing to do a UASF to push Segwit through under the pretence that any of the miners that are not mining Segwit are illegitimate as they are against the “consensus”. This will force the miners into making some kind of decision either way. Many are likely to side with Core but I think a significant portion will side with BU initially. A number of different things could happen in this scenario depending on the ratio of hash power on each side of the split. If the split is mostly equal, I expect that two coins will survive for some amount of time. What happens with bitcoin from that point I have no idea. If BU/EC gains the most hash power then the debate will rage on as the BU/EC will refuse to attack the minority chain out of moral reasons. What happens with bitcoin from that point I have no idea. If Core gains the majority share then the BU minority chain will be attacked by some of the majority miners. Core and their supporters do not have any moral objections against this kind of attack. The minority BU miners will then switch back to Core and it will likely play out like in scenario 3.

So this is BU’s fault for forcing a hard fork?

No, this is Core’s fault by making a hard fork dangerous by telling everyone a hard fork is dangerous for the past two years and blocking every conceivable compromise. They have petrified the bitcoin community and convinced them that any kind of hard fork for any reason that does not come from them is dangerous. They have done this to hold onto the power they should not even have in the first place. They have become the self appointed kings of bitcoin. They have achieved this by threatening to burn down the network instead of making a compromise, and by attacking anyone who threatens to take this power away from them. Unfortunately, when Gavin stepped down, he handed to keys to the bitcoin house to the wolves and once they are inside, it seems it is not possible to get them out again. The only way to make them totally irrelevant is to exit and let them be kings of nothing.

Why did you even become a mod in the first place?

I have known bitcoin was on a negative trajectory for quite some time but I felt that one last push to save it was worth my effort. I wanted to help btc be the best bitcoin subreddit to overcome some of the damage that bitcoin has done to the community. IMO btc is the best bitcoin subreddit, but it is far from perfect. I feel very strongly that the moderation of btc is a microcosm of the situation in the bitcoin community in general. I feel there is far too much weight put on idealogical decision making rather pragmatism and realism. The moderation policies of btc are ‘hands-off’ to a point I think is actually detrimental to the sub and to bitcoin. The issue is that, trolls overwhelm the sub and cause constant controversy. They act like a fire under the community and purposely rile everyone up. There is a reason for this. bitcoin was controlled mostly through censorship. Censorship alone was enough to create an echo chamber. They do not have control of the btc moderation team (well actually they managed to get two mods on here who have since left/been removed) so they must turn it into an echo-chamber by other means. They have achieved this by making sure every single post has comments from trolls that try to rile up the community. This makes the btc community have more tunnel vision as they/we try to insulate ourselves from the trolls. The problem is that it means that the community becomes highly idealogical and focused on only one goal.
IMO it is a failure of this sub to not remove comments from trolls. This is pretty much a standard policy across the whole of reddit and the only reasons for not employing it are idealogical. Removing trolling is not the same as banning specific ideas or topics being genuinely discussed. Not doing so just makes btc a frustrating place to try and discuss things. It also means that any actual discussions outside the block size debate get very little traction as everyone gets dragged into the angry posts.
I should be clear though, the other mods of this sub are great and absolutely want what is best for bitcoin.

Isn’t this all just FUD

I am not writing this to sway anyone. This is what I genuinely think will happen, but of course I could be wrong about every single prediction. It saddens me enormously to write this. The current trajectory for Bitcoin is down and the the trajectory for Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies is up. There will likely be people who say “but Ethereum doesn’t have any uses cases”, my argument to that is; what use-cases does bitcoin have right now that could not immediately be adopted by Ethereum today? There will also be people who say “but if bitcoin dies then all other cryptocurrencies will die with it, because how could anyone trust their money if it might just disappear”? My argument to that is; all cryptocurrencies are still in their infancy, even bitcoin. The writing has been on the wall for Bitcoin for quite some time. I do think there will likely be one ‘great’ cryptocurrency, but until that cryptocurrency is adopted by the masses, that title is still available. If the title of ‘biggest cryptocurrency’ can be taken then it was likely never meant to have it very long anyway. If/When a cryptocurrency manages to achieve mass adoption then it will have hundreds of millions of people, companies, organisations and even countries defending it. At that point the entire system will be working towards it’s success. At that point, the current moral ambivalence towards attacking a minority chain will be seen as ridiculous. After mass adoption of a cryptocurrency (for example Ethereum) has occurred, grandma’s will be writing to their local MP in support of the cyberwar against the Ethereum competitor ‘Othereum’. That is decentralisation. Huge numbers of diverse entities working to defend it. This will never happen on a network as limited as bitcoin’s is. In fact bitcoin is actively losing allies.

TL/DR

I’m out. Ethereum is likely to take over this year as bitcoin becomes myspace. This may happen very rapidly. I hope I am wrong.

Disclosure:

I hold both Bitcoin and Ethereum. I have held a number of different cryptocurrencies over the years, but my holdings were almost always 90-100% bitcoin until recently.

13 Ways to Save Money Passively (Best Passive Money Saving Apps/Sites 2018)

Are we really doing this again already?
About 6 months ago I made the second version of this post, which listed 10 ways for you to save money passively.
Since that post I have found quite a few additions and I feel like it's already time for an update.
Just to clarify, this post is mainly just an update to the previous post. Some points made here will be exactly the same from last time, but there are a lot of additions and clarifications this time around.

13 Ways to Save Money Passively 2018

Drop - (iOS | Android)

Completely Passive, Ref = fish

In the first post I said:
If anyone asks me, "Fishering, what is your favorite beermoney app?" I'll respond with Drop.
12 months later, I don't totally know if that's exactly true, just because Drop has gone through some changes that has made it seem (psychologically) not as great as it once was.
For those of you who don't know what Drop is, Drop is a passive loyalty program that allows you to choose 5 popular stores where you'll earn cash back (automatically) at as soon as you shop at them (both online or in store). Here are just a few of the stores you can pick from: Walmart, Macy's, Dunkin Donuts, Target, Whole Foods, Walgreens, Starbucks, Uber, McDonalds, and my personal favorite, Chipotle! There's about 20-30 stores you can pick from for your perm. ongoing offers.
If you signed up for drop in the previous post, you might not have noticed this, but they have actually changed their program a bit since then. There's a good chance you didn't even notice any differences at all, but they have recently set a weekly limit of $5 in cash back, and they seem to be wanting to limit what purchases count for cash back.
From Drop's TOS:
Drop users are limited to earning a maximum of 5,000 Drop points per calendar week (Sunday – Saturday) in connection with Drop’s ongoing (as opposed to one-time) offers. Drop maintains the right to review the accrual of points and to determine, in Drop’s absolute discretion, if certain transactions qualify for Drop Offers. Certain spending including, but not limited to, repeat purchases, high-value purchases, purchases of gift cards, and purchases made for commercial, non-personal or non-household purposes, may not, at Drop’s absolute discretion, be considered Qualifying Transactions and may be ineligible for Drop points.
Source. I really do recommend you take a look over this.. there are a lot of hidden secrets in Drop, like that 5000 point limit per week, while most people won't spend $500 (with 1% cash back) in a week, it still makes this program seem so much worse.
Anyways, if you're not signed up for Drop, it's really a great app. I've been enjoying it since its launch and I've made a fair amount back in savings from it.
Cash outs are instant and start with various gift cards at $5 (5000 points). (Amazon is $10 minimum).

Spent (iOS | Android)

EDIT: Spent has just announced a referral program! For every friend you refer you'll get a $5 bonus when they earn their first cashback. Additionally, all friends you refer will receive $10 when they sign up. Here's my referral link. You might have to click on it from a mobile device in order for it to track correctly. It seems that Spent has done away with the referral program.

Almost Completely Passive

Spent is very similar to Drop... so if you like Drop, chances are you'll also enjoy Spent. Unlike Drop, with spent you'll earn 1% cash back at all of the stores they offer, so you don't need to pick just your favorites. Here are all of the stores that Drop offers 1% cash back at. (Note: All of the stores with strikethroughs are stores that were originally offered, but have sent been removed).
  • Starbucks
  • Amazon
  • Spotify
  • Netflix
  • Grubhub
  • Walgreens
  • Uber
  • Panera Bread
  • Staples
  • Petsmart
  • Costco
  • iTunes
  • ExxonMobil
  • 7-Eleven
  • McDonalds
  • Kroger
  • The Home Depot
  • Chick-Fil-A
  • Whole Foods
  • Shell
  • Chevron
There are a few things about Spent that are better than Drop, but there are also a few things that are negatives here.
I'll go ahead and make a nice little pros/cons list of Spent.
Pros of Spent:
  • $10 Sign up bonus (may or may not require referral link used?).
  • PayPal cash outs.
  • Manage transactions in the app.
  • Cash out minimum $0.01 w/ Gift Card Discount
Cons of Spent:
  • $20 Minimum cash out (PayPal).
  • Cash Back takes 1 month to get approved from pending.
Spent is also similar to Drop because you must link your bank account to it. This seems to be a common trend with these apps. And yes, Spent does stack with Drop, but Spent might not stack with other Empyr apps. You'll learn more about Empyr later in this post, or just CTRL+F for "Empyr". Just note that when you link a card with Spent you might have just unlinked your card from another Empyr app.
One thing I want to update about Spent is how cash outs work now. Since the original post a year ago I think it's important to note some changes. Cash outs for Spent are done through PayPal at $20 minimum (payment is sent instantly?). However, in the app they now have an option for you to purchase gift cards at a discount. So for example, you could be somewhere that Spent doesn't support.. Let's say Papa John's... and they'll let you buy a Papa John's gift card on the app and you'll receive 3% back. If you have any cash back balance you'll be able to use that to help pay for the gift card (or pay for it entirely, if you have enough balance). I can see this being a viable "cash out" option for users who feel like they'll never hit the $20 minimum. It won't be a free gift card, but a discount nonetheless. Do note that if you're someone who is only using drop for the 1% cash back at the select retailers listed above it will take you $2000 in spend to reach the $20 minimum cash out. That could take a while for some people, depending on how much you spend at these places.
One other thing about Spent that's worth mentioning is that it does also offer shopping portals online (spentapp.com) and you'll be able to find cash back for Travel/Hotels/Rental Cars. Just something worth checking out if you're interested in it. They also have an app called Spent Travel you might want to check out.

Pei ref = fish

Completely Passive

Pei is another new automatic cash back app, very similar to Drop & Spent. Pei is (as of posting) in an invite only system and they seem to be slowly letting users in. I was able to get early access since I'm 'Media'. I'm not sure how you can get invited into this app at this time, but if you read what I have to say about Pei that you find interesting, feel free to download the app and join the waitlist. I'd imagine soon they'll just let everybody in at once.
The one important thing to note about Pei is that it does run on the Empyr network. I was in contact with Pei about this and they confirmed that if you link a different Empyr app you will no longer receive the benefits from Pei. This is different from Spent since with Spent you can link your card (at which point your card will unlink from your previous Empyr app), but then link your card to a different Empyr app and you'll still get the 1% cash back offers to pay out. Just the local offers on Spent won't pay out. With Pei if you unlink your card, the whole app will break. So I'm going to try and convince you here that Pei is different from the other Empyr apps, and might be interesting and worth taking your one Empyr app slot.

Pros of Pei:

  • Cash Back at a lot of locations (way more than any of the other Empyr apps).
  • Cash out via PayPal or Bitcoin.
  • Stacks w/ Drop & Spent

Cons of Pei:

  • Steep $15 cash out minimum.
  • Hard to track where your points are coming from (no history page with transactions?)
So with all of that being said, let's talk about the stores you can find on Pei. Just note that these are only stores that are local to me, so if I don't have a certain store near me that Pei offers, I won't have it on this list. Please feel free to leave a comment informing me of what I'm missing.
  • Panda Express - 1.5%
  • Target - 1%
  • Petco - 1%
  • PetSmart - 1%
  • Sephora - 1%
  • Banana Republic - 1%
  • American Eagle Outfitters - 1%
  • Gap - 1%
  • Old Navy - 1%
  • Chipotle <3 - 1.2%
  • Taco Bell - 2%
  • Dominos Pizza - 1.5%
  • CVS - 1%
  • Starbucks - 1%
  • AMC - 2%
  • GameStop - 1.2%
  • Subway - 1.5%
  • 7-Eleven - 1%
  • Dunkin' Donuts - 1.5%
  • Walgreens - 1%
  • Nordstrom - 1%
  • Supercuts - 2%
  • ZARA - 1.2%
  • Express - 1%
  • H&M - 1.2%
  • Urban Outfitters - 1%
  • + Local locations - ~5%
Please let me know if there is anything inaccurate about this list if you're able to get into the app.

Paribus

Completely Passive

Paribus is not your typical cash back site. Once you sign up you can link your different accounts (such as your amazon account) and it will automatically track your shopping. Paribus doesn't directly earn you cash back... it acts more like Walmart's saving catcher if you've ever heard of that. If an item you buy somewhere goes on sale shortly after or if there's any other discounts/promotions you may have missed when you originally bought something, they'll quietly get you a rebate on whatever you purchased. It can be very hit or miss. The catch is that they do take a cut of your savings. I believe it is 30% for all new users, but for each member you refer you can cut the cut by 5%. If you save $10, they'll charge you $3 to whatever card you have linked.
Personally I've found it to be really hit or miss, but I've found some incredible savings. I bought a gopro and I got $15 saved with Paribus, and I also got $50 back from some really nice headphones I picked up on amazon from Amazon. What's weird is I bought the headphones like 6 months prior to the rebate. Was shocking to see it, but I've really had some good luck with Paribus.

Sift (iOS | No Android)

Completely Passive

After the last post, I noticed a lot of people enjoyed Paribus, so I figured it'd be good to add some alternatives in this post.
So, here's Sift. Sift is a similar site to Paribus, and its key focus is on enforcing credit card benefits that many people don't know about. It's actually pretty nice. It'll let you pick your credit card and it'll tell you pretty much everything about your card. I have the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, and I was actually shocked to hear some of the benefits my card has that I have never been taking advantage of.
From Sift's site:
We automatically comb through your credit card policies to show you all your benefits in one place. For every purchase we let you know what benefits you are eligible for. We streamline the claim process to make it as simple as possible to get your money back.
You can link your emails as well as your amazon account as well and they'll make it really easy for you.
I have not actually used Sift much myself, so I cannot attest to how well it works, but the app store reviews are generally positive for Sift.
Massive golf clap to zarraza2k for pointing Sift out.

Trim Savings - Referral Link

Completely Passive

Trim is similar to Paribus and Sift, but there's a certain void that it's trying to fill that the other two don't really seem to be filling.
Trim's main selling point is its bill negotiations. Instead of trying to save you money when a price drops, they're going to try and just nip it right in the bud and try to get your bills lower.
Right now they're mainly trying to negotiate with cell providers, internet providers, and cable providers.
Here's how the process goes:
  • Submit Your Bill: Submit your most recent cell phone, cable or internet bill to get started.
  • Trim Negotiates: Trim negotiates with your provider to get you discounts on your bill.
  • You Save Money: Trim takes 25% of annualized savings, but only on success—otherwise, it's free!
So, similar to Paribus, Trim does charge a fee. In a sense, I guess that's a good thing because it gives them an incentive to make sure to get some sort of bill decrease for you so they'll make some money too. Their rate is currently 25% of your bill negotiation. Of course, if they're not able to negotiate your bill for you, you won't pay them anything.
Trim does also monitor your bank account for you and they'll notify you of account changes (that you can set). For example, if they see a transaction worth $xxx, they'll notify me that I've made a large transaction. If there weren't already so many other sites/apps that could do that, I'd say that's a great feature that Trim offers.
One thing Trim also offers that is pretty nice is a cute little referral system.
Send your friends the link below, and you'll both get $2 when they connect an account...We'll send you an Amazon Gift Code worth $2.
So, that's cute :). As always, if you do happen to sign up with my refs, it's appreciated greatly.

SavingStar

Very Passive

Note: If you remember reading about SavingStar in my post from 6 12 months ago, nothing has changed.
SavingStar has been around for a very long time. It doesn't get a lot of love around here because it can often be referred to as the 'shittier version of iBotta'. While I agree that the products they have to offer for rebates are limited, there are two things that make SavingStar better than iBotta.
  1. Ease of adding deals.
On iBotta you will find a lot of offers on products you might be interested in buying, but activating the deals can be very tedious. Sometimes you'll have to watch an ad or answer a short survey just to qualify for a rebate. SavingStar makes it a lot easier. All you have to do is tap. Since there's no limit to how many rebates you can activate, I recommend just activating them all. Check in to the app maybe once or twice a week just to activate offers. Even if you don't plan on purchasing something, just add it in case you happen to buy it anyways.
  1. Ease of redeeming rebates.
iBotta can be a pain with this. After you activate a rebate and buy it, sometimes they will make you scan items (or did they get rid of this? I have not used iBotta in a while), and sometimes you'll have to scan your receipt. The process can be long. SavingStar makes it a lot easier by allowing you to link your store rewards card to redeem the rebates. After activation of a rebate, all you need to do is buy the item(s) from the store you have linked, and your account balance will automatically update.
When I first used this app (it's probably been about 5 1/2 years since I first signed up), I secretly linked my mom's Jewel-Osco card without telling her and each week I would activate all of the offers and I would just check the app every time after my mom went shopping and I would get so happy to see a couple dollars added to the account balance. Was one of the easiest beermoney apps for me at the time :). Jewel-Osco kinda got rid of their card a while back, so that made me sad, but you can still link the following cards to your SavingStar account: Stop&Shop, Peapod, CVS, Kmart, Piggly Wiggly, Mariano's. They have a handful of other stores as well, but that requires you to scan a receipt.

GetUpside

Semi Passive, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and Florida/Long Island.

GetUpside isn't really passive, but it qualifies for use a so many places (in the select states) that it feels like it deserves a spot on this list. Upside has been popular around here (for the people who can use it) because it allows you to compare gas prices at places, and earn cash back at over 600 gas stations in these three places. It's really easy because you don't really have to look hard to find the gas stations, and you just have to submit a receipt. If I could use this I'd probably just go to fill up, and while I'm waiting I'll open up the app to see if the gas station I'm at qualifies. It'd give me something to do for the minute while I wait for the tank to fill up.
GetUpside now offers cashback at certain grocery stores and restaurants. Does anyone know if GetUpside uses Empyr? I mean I told them I lived in a state where GetUpside works and I'm seeing I could be getting 20% cash back at Qdoba.
Like wtf bro i just want burritos in chicago is that too much to ask for wtf
whatever fuck it chipotle is better
In the DC area? You can also save up to 35% at restaurants and 15% at grocery stores near you.
It seems like they're mainly targeting DC area for restaurant and grocery cash back, but the play store lists DC, MD, and VA.
I don't use GetUpside because I live in Michigan/Chicago, and they have not reached us yet :(. They do have a referral program, though. Please please please, go ahead and start an Upside ref train below, I give permission on this post, unless the mods disagree.

SamsungPay

Completely Passive, Samsung devices only

SamsungPay has dropped so hard since I last updated this post. The only other thing that used to be on this list that has gone further was Expense Rewards (if you don't know what Expense Rewards is, don't worry about it. ._. )
Update: SamsungPay will now earn you 5-20 points per transaction, and they have removed all gift cards and rewards cards. You can now only redeem for 'coupons' or instant win sweepstakes. As of posting/edit they currently have $30 Uber Promo Codes, $25 Grubhub codes, and $25 Atom Tickets codes for 6,250 points, but these appear to be temporary. All of these codes have their own terms and limitations, so they're not as cut and dry as they might seem.
Samsung Pay has become my favorite way to pay... not only because I get rewards for using it, but because it totally takes a shit on apple pay and android pay. I am using my phone to pay at places where all of the employees tell me 'oh we don't allow you to pay with a phone', and I just shove my phone against their card reader and prove them wrong. It makes the process a lot easier for me as well.
Samsung pay has a rewards system where you'll earn anywhere from 10-40 5-20 points for a purchase. They have a level system each month where the more purchases you make in one month, the more your purchases will be worth the next. You'll have to maintain your levels to keep up the next month. Currently to reach the highest level (platinum) and receive 40 20 points per transaction, you'll need 30 transactions in a month.
I'll touch a little bit more on Samsung Pay's reward scheme shortly.
SamsungPay often offers various promotions that will offer discounts at certain stores or discounts on gift cards. As of posting they have 15-20% off various gift cards for 'back to school'. There's almost always some sort of gift card discount going on, so that could be a nonpassive way for you to save some money here and there.
So what kinds of rewards can you get from Samsung Rewards?
Currently you can spend your rewards points on some instant win games. I don't waste my time with them.
They also offer a few gift cards. Currently they offer ThinkGeek, Sephora, AMC, Uber, Best Buy, Gamestop, Shutterfly, and Overstock. You can also get a visa rewards card starting at $5 for 2000 points. These rewards cards automatically apply to your cards for Samsung pay and you can use them anywhere. SamsungPay has now done away with Gift Cards and Rewards Cards.
To anyone who has used Samsung Pay in the past (or maybe has not checked on it recently, or used it since the last post 6 months ago, for those of you who read that), they recently devalued their points.
Previously a $50 Samsung Rewards Card cost 10,000 points. Now it costs 12,500 points. I'm sad, and I wish they gave us a warning before the change.
Of course this is only for people who have qualifying Samsung devices: S6, S7, S8, S9, and the newer note devices.

Uber Visa Local Offers

Completely Passive

Just feel like throwing this important fact in here: I am a 5.00 star rated rider on Uber. Just wanted to boast.
Shop or dine out, get Uber credits back.
use your Visa card next time you dine out or go on a shopping spree at a featured store and earn Uber credits toward future rides. To join, go to settings in your Uber app and tap on Visa Local Offers.
If any of you are familiar with Swagbucks Local or apps similar to that, this is similar to those types of apps. Whenever you shop out at certain places you'll instantly receive uber credits to your account. It's really simple, and yes, this does stack with all of the other cash back apps you might be a part of.
If you're interested in activating the Visa local offers, you'll need to make sure you have a visa card linked to your Uber account first, and then you should see "activate local offers" in the app settings of Uber. I don't know if you'll see anything in the Uber Eats app, but you can use uber credits in either app.
There's really not much to say about Visa Local Offers, but if you're looking for some FAQ/Terms, feel free to check them all out here.

Cash App "Boosts"

Eh, Kinda Passive I guess

For those if you who don't know what Cash App is, Cash App is an app by Square that lets you send and receive payments. They've also expanded their app to support bitcoin purchases, and they'll also let you use the app as a checking account. With the cash app you can also sign up to receive the Cash Card, which is a debit card that is funded with your cash app balance.
If you have not used Cash App before, they do have a fancy referral program where when you sign up and send $50 you'll receive $5 and so will I. I do want to make this very clear: Cash App referrals can see the full name of the person who refers you, and the person who refers you will have your full name shown to them. If you're really private about personal information, be careful whose referral link you use. If you trust me, here's my referral link.
On a totally unrelated note, can someone please tell me if I correctly used the word 'whose' in the pervious paragraph? I'm really trying to get better at grammar and I still get fucked by who's / whose and who / whom.
Please note that if you want to use the cash app boosts that I'm talking about, you'll need to be 18 years old and have the cash card (which is free, don't worry)!
Cash App recently announced that their cash card will now be seeing 'boosts'. Boosts are their fancy way of saying that when you use our card at certain locations you'll receive a discount.
Once you have the cash card, you'll notice on the app below your card you'll be able to select your boost. Here are the current options (as of posting):
  • Coffee Shops (pretty much any coffee shop) - $1 Off Each Visit
  • Shake Shack - 15% Off Each Visit
  • Whole Foods - 5% Off Each Visit
  • Panera - 10% Off Each Visit
  • Subway - $1 Off Each Visit
  • Chick-fil-A - 10% Off Each Visit
  • Chipotle <3 - 15% Off Each Visit
So there are quite a few things I want to say & clear up.
  1. You can use a boost every 2 hours.
  2. You must select the boost that you'd like to use prior to the purchase. AFAIK you're able to swap which boost you want to use as often as you'd like. So when you walk into Chick-Fil-A, just check and make sure your boost is set to CFA. If not, swap it.
  3. In order to apply the boost, you must pay with the Cash Card. It's automatic. If your total is $6 and you're saving 10%, you'll only need a Cash app balance of $5.4 for the transaction. Cash App will cover the other $0.60.
  4. If you link your Cash Card to Apple Pay, you can pay with it that way and the boosts will still be applied.
Do realize that just because you have the Cash Card on the app, you won't see the boosts. You need to have the physical Cash Card in your possession for the boosts to show up.
I've been really enjoying using the Cash Card for purchases. Especially at CFA & Chipotle. It's really not a hassle. When I'm standing in line at Chipotle I'll open the app and make sure my cash app balance is enough and if not I'll just add funds right away. The boost is applied immediately which makes you feel good. It's like the guac is free at Chipotle after you use the cash card. The only downside to using the Cash Card is that you won't be able to stack discounts with anything else on this list... Unless you find a way to link the Cash Card to any of the things on this list. Regardless, 15% off at Chipotle is the best I have found, so I'm perfectly okay with it. If you're shopping at Whole foods, on the other hand, 5% might not be the best you can do. Stack a nice credit card with 1% Back from Spent and whatever other apps might have whole foods and you might be able to net >5%.

Empyr Apps

Completely Passive

In the last post I didn't include any of the apps like Swagbucks Local or Dosh (actually I don't even know if Dosh was out yet at that point). So, here we go.
I've listed this as "Empyr Apps" because all of these apps are basically just the same thing. I'll take the example of Swagbucks Local since that's what most of you reading this will already be using.
If you paid attention in the Visa Local Offers section of this post, you'll find that the Empyr apps are actually very similar to those visa local offers.
When you shop at a certain store/restaurant, you'll earn with the empyr app you have linked. It's actually really not that special.
Here's a list of some/most of the current Empyr powered apps:
IMPORTANT NOTE: You're only allowed to use one Empyr app at a time! As soon as you link up with another Empyr app, you'll be disqualified from another until you link back up.
I do want to go into this list a bit this time around since there seem to be more and more Empyr apps popping up.
Dosh might be the most popular of these apps right now. Dosh has nice referral programs as well as sign up bonuses that makes it very enticing. Dosh also has very decent cash back at the stores they offer.
Swagbucks Local will always be popular among Swagbucks users. What's really nice about Swagbucks Local is that the payouts are always instantly converted to Swagbucks, which can help you cash out sooner. You'll also likely get a slot in the Swago board filled out, which might be beneficial to you.
Pei is a really cool new app on Empyr that offers cash back at a lot of places you likely shop at. I talk about it above.
RetailMeNot is a newer one on this list and it's the only one here that I feel like I recommend you go on/off with. RetailMeNot has recently been doing a lot of "Spend $X, get $Y" deals at a lot of the stores they offer. For example, they are currently offering $5 Cash back for in Store purchases of $30+ at Staples. This is a really good deal for an Empyr app, and would probably be my pick for that transaction, but not most of the time since they don't have very many stores as options.
Here's what I plan on doing:
Most of the time I will plan on having my cards linked to one app... Probably Dosh, SB Local, or Pei. If I find a good offer on the RetailMeNot app, I would temporarily link my card to that just for the transaction and then link back to another app. I really just have to recommend you download all of these apps and see what they have to offer for you and pick your favorite.

TruNow

Eh, it's not actually passive... Ref = DCIBS9

TruNow is the one app I was really debating whether or not should make it on this list. It's not passive, but it stacks very nicely with a lot of these apps and it's really the only receipt app right now that scales, so I think it deserves a spot here as well as on my upcoming receipt apps comparison.
TruNow is a rather new app that will give you cash back at gas stations. It's actually a really easy process. You'll first go shopping at a gas station (probably buying gas) and once you're done you just upload a photo of your receipt to TruNow. All gas station receipts will pay 1%* cash back. Certain partnered gas stations will pay 2%* cash back.
The thing that makes this app so good is that it stacks with everything. Let's say I buy gas from ExxonMobil. I'll sign up for their rewards program and pay with a CC that earns a high rate at gas stations. I'll earn 1% from Spent and combine that with the rewards program and CC bonuses and earn 1%* cash back from TruNow as well.
You can cash out your TruNow balance to PayPal or spend it at a partnered retailer.
*So the issue with this app is that if you do choose to cash out to PayPal you'll only get half your money. So if you're using this and intend on cashing out to PayPal, just note that you're really earning 0.5% cash back. The minimum cash out is $5 for PayPal, so you'll earn $5 for every $1000 you spend on gas.
The app does have a referral program where you'll earn $2 for signing up under a ref link and the person who refers you also gets $2. If you feel like trying TruNow out, my ref is DCIBS9.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it. 10 different ways to save money passively. I usually say at the end of my posts that I can't even type anymore because my hands are tired. I think that's absolutely going on right now. Right now this post is just over 20,000 characters long. One of my longest ones yet :)
Please, feel free to leave comments or questions for me. Make sure to get one of your ten required comments on this post so you can enter that ref contest next week!
And that's it. I'm done :) My first megapost of 2018! This is going to be a great year in beermoney :) You just wait!

PART 2 -- 17 Apps That Will Save You Money Passively (Best Passive Saving Apps 2018) PART 2

Part 2

Hi, this is actually part two of my Save Money Passively post, so if you're starting here, that's probably fine, but just note that it might be better to start at part 1.

ReceiptPal

ReceiptPal is an app that allows you to upload your receipts from almost anywhere that you go shopping. It's actually a really simple process.
When you sign up you'll be presented with almost little scratch cards which contains 4 spaces. Each space is filled with a receipt that you upload. Once you reach 4 receipts, you'll earn 100 points. 400 points = $1, so basically every 16 receipts you upload you'll receive $1.
"So, mr Fishering, how is this passive!?"
Unlike most receipt apps, ReceiptPal allows you to link your emails and amazon account and they'll automatically upload receipts for you. I actually let this app alone for several months and came back to thousands of points and cashed out instantly.

Paribus

Sift (iOS | Android)

After the last post, I noticed a lot of people enjoyed Paribus, so I figured it'd be good to add some alternatives in this post.
So, here's Sift. Sift is a similar site to Paribus, and its key focus is on enforcing credit card benefits that many people don't know about. It's actually pretty nice. It'll let you pick your credit card and it'll tell you pretty much everything about your card. I have the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, and I was actually shocked to hear some of the benefits my card has that I have never been taking advantage of.

You can link your emails as well as your amazon account as well and they'll make it really easy for you.
I have not actually used Sift much myself, so I cannot attest to how well it works, but the app store reviews are generally positive for Sift.

GetUpside

DC, Virginia, Maryland, Florida/Long Island, and scattered throughout the US.

GetUpside is now available around the US in certain areas, so if you've been ignoring this app, I'd recommend you give it a look again! I'm seeing gas stations around me in both Grand Rapids and Chicago.
GetUpside isn't really passive, but it qualifies for use a so many places (in the select states) that it feels like it deserves a spot on this list.

Conclusion

I don't really think there's too much to say here. I recommend you sign up for as many of these apps/sites as you possibly can if you're interested because while it may seem like 1% cash back at a store isn't a lot, if you're able to stack it with multiple apps, it really does add up fast.
