Is API import to tax calculating software such as cointracking.info or bitcoin.tax safe? Can someone please explain it to me in layman's term what is an API import?

I am asking this question because I am not a technical person and wanted to make sure that I understand it at least in laymans term before I move forward.
This year it seems like tax calculation for cryptocurrency transactions are painful when doing it manually and found these two sites which will calculate it for you. I want to use the API import if its safe. Also, if anyone else has used it previously, your insights would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a software developer but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how a currency that is allegedly backed by cryptography could get hacked like that.
